Serving the Children of the World

First Lady's Focus

"I hope each of you will join me in supporting the Foundation’s major focus, Pediatric Trauma, and our six partner hospitals, thereby allowing the Foundation to meet the increasing needs of our partner hospitals. Governor Dick and I fully support the District Foundation in their continued efforts to build a better future for our children. Together with your help, we can accomplish so much more.”

-- Cheryl Olmstead, 2011-2012 First Lady

Each year, Kiwanians of the Cal-Nev-Ha District of Kiwanis International are given the opportunity to support a project chosen by the Governor’s spouse. Our 2011-2012 First Lady, Cheryl Olmstead, has chosen the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation’s Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) and our Partner Hospitals as her focus.
Why Focus on Our Partner Hospitals?
Governor Dick and I are committed to helping keep children safe. According to Safe Kids USA, each day in the U.S., 15 children die from unintentional injury. Unintentional injury remains the leading cause of death for children 14 and under in the U.S. and research indicates 90% of these injuries can be prevented!

The Foundation’s Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) is designed to promote awareness of steps that can be taken to prevent unintentional injuries, and to provide training and equipment to medical personnel so that they can effectively treat children who do suffer a traumatic injury.

One important aspect of PTP is our Partner Hospital program. The Foundation has partnered with six children’s hospitals in Oakland, Loma Linda, San Diego, Madera, Honolulu and Reno, to provide grant funding which enable our partner hospitals to offer advanced pediatric training for doctors, nurses, and first responders; purchase specialized pediatric medical equipment; and reach out to their communities with educational materials, safety equipment, and information on childhood trauma prevention.

In recent years, the grant requests the Foundation receives from our partner hospitals has increased in both the number of grant requests received and in dollar amounts requested; however, the Foundation has been unable to fully fund these requests from our partner hospitals. Together, we can do more. Your support is critical to ensuring the Foundation is able to meet the needs of our clubs, our partner hospitals and the children of Cal-Nev-Ha. It’s only with your support of the Pediatric Trauma Program that we’re able to meet these increasing needs.
As a past grant recipient, staff at Renown Children’s Hospital explain . . .

“With the support of the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation, Renown Children’s Hospital is able to provide specialized training for nurses in our Children’s ER and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, which are the only units of their kind between Salt Lake City and Sacramento. The Emergency Nursing Pediatrics Course (ENPC) developed by the Emergency Nurses Association is a 16-hour course designed to provide core-level pediatric knowledge and psychomotor skills needed to care for pediatric patients in an emergency or trauma situation. Because of our partnership with Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation, the emergency and pediatric staffs at Renown Children’s Hospital collaborate to enhance the patient experience and provide continuity in care for our smallest patients and their families.”

Working together, making a difference:

Together, we can keep children safe by providing education and resources to children and their families and by supporting our network of children’s hospitals.

It is our hope each club will join us in our efforts to give children in the communities we share the very best chance to live full and meaningful lives. There are many ways both clubs and members can impact a child.
